# Canopy vs Claude Code Desktop: which agent workspace fits?

> A current, fair comparison of parallel sessions, worktrees, preview, PR review, remote work, supported CLIs, accounts, and operating systems.

Claude Code Desktop already offers parallel sessions, optional Git worktrees, a terminal, browser preview, diff review, PR monitoring, session messaging, and cloud work. Canopy's reason to exist is different: it organizes several installed coding CLIs and the surrounding project work in one local workspace. This comparison uses public documentation checked on 28 September 2026 and separates Canopy's current-main claims from its latest downloadable release.

## What each product centers

Claude Code Desktop's Code tab is a graphical home for Claude Code sessions. It offers local, cloud, and SSH environments and uses Anthropic's model service by default, with documented enterprise gateway and provider routing. Canopy runs supported installed CLIs in real PTYs, so a project can include Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode, and other launcher tools with varying integration depth. Each CLI retains its own account, model choices, and billing. Running several providers together is a workflow distinction, not proof that one app is universally faster or cheaper.

| Question | Canopy | Claude Code Desktop |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Primary agent | Installed supported coding CLIs in real terminals | Claude Code in the Code tab |
| Parallel sessions | Agent tabs, panes, branch and worktree context | Session sidebar, panes, and optional Git worktrees |
| Running result | Saved local services, detected URLs, Preview and feedback | Preview servers, Browser pane, and Claude auto-verification |
| Code review | Agent Workspace, diff, PR context and draft findings | Diff comments, review, and PR/CI monitoring |
| Away from desk | PIN-protected Remote to a running desktop host | Cloud sessions and phone/Dispatch paths; local sessions still depend on the host |
| Accounts and models | The chosen CLI's provider account and limits | Claude account or configured enterprise provider/gateway |
| Platforms | macOS, Windows, and Linux release assets | macOS, Windows, and Linux beta per current docs |

## Give Claude Desktop credit for its complete local workflow

Anthropic's current documentation describes session panes, integrated terminal, file editor, Browser preview, Git-isolated worktrees, diff comments, and PR monitoring. The Browser can start and stop configured servers and Claude can verify its own changes. A comparison that says Claude Desktop cannot manage parallel agents or preview code is outdated. If your work is entirely Claude Code and you prefer its integrated review and cloud option, start by testing Desktop with your actual repository.

## Where Canopy changes the choice

Canopy's current-main README describes a project view for supported installed CLI sessions, service commands, previews, Git, PRs, tickets, shared project context, and local usage signals. That can help when you switch between Claude Code and Codex or supervise several components and reviewers. Its August 2026 parity audit also shows uneven resume, token, context, and file-attribution support by CLI, so a multi-CLI launcher does not mean identical capabilities. Verify important controls in the installed Canopy v0.3.4 build or a newer release before relying on them.

## Do not equate the two remote modes

Canopy Remote connects to a Canopy instance running on your computer through LAN or an optional tunnel; it is off by default and requires the current PIN. Claude Desktop's documented cloud sessions run on Anthropic-managed infrastructure and can continue after a computer is shut down. Its local sessions, by contrast, run on the local machine. If your goal is an agent that works while your laptop is off, choose a genuinely hosted or otherwise always-on environment; a phone interface to a sleeping computer does not provide one.

## Compare accounts and privacy boundaries

Canopy itself has no required account or telemetry according to its app README, while the installed CLI and optional integrations may use their own networks. Claude Desktop's Code tab uses Claude's service by default and has account, plan, and organization controls; its documentation also describes gateways and third-party provider configurations for supported deployments. Do not translate this into a blanket 'offline' claim for Canopy or a blanket 'Claude-only infrastructure' claim for every enterprise setup. Check which process sends code, where it runs, and which account pays in the configuration you will actually use.

## Run one controlled comparison

On two disposable branches from the same commit, give each product the same bounded task: change a form, show a success and error state, run the app, and present the latest diff. In Canopy, choose the installed CLI you would normally use; in Claude Desktop, use the comparable Claude Code account and model if you want to isolate the workspace difference. Record how you find the agent that needs you, verify the correct branch and preview, inspect the final PR, and account for review time. Repeat with a second non-Claude CLI only if multi-provider operation matters to you. Treat the result as a workflow trial, not a model benchmark.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Claude Code Desktop have worktrees and a browser preview?

Yes. Current documentation describes optional worktrees, an integrated terminal, Browser preview, diff review, and PR monitoring. Compare the whole workflow rather than assuming those features are missing.

### Does Canopy Remote keep working when my computer is off?

No. It connects to the running Canopy desktop host. Claude Desktop cloud sessions are a separate hosted mode that can continue after the local computer shuts down.

### Can I use Codex CLI in Claude Code Desktop's Code tab as its main agent?

The Code tab is built around Claude Code. You may run other commands in a local terminal, but its documented agent sessions are Claude Code sessions. Canopy explicitly launches supported installed CLIs as agent sessions.

### Is Claude Desktop unavailable on Linux?

No longer according to the documentation checked 28 September 2026: a Linux beta is listed. Check the current install and feature notes for your distribution.

Canopy runs installed coding CLIs; CLI accounts, model selection, and provider billing remain separate. Check the installed release before relying on version-specific behavior.
